Lake Lawn Lore

The birthplace of the pink lemonade legend.
Delavan is famous for its circus history, and local lore credits the Mabie Circus, whose winter headquarters were on the Lake Lawn property, with the invention of pink lemonade. According to the story, a circus vendor accidentally mixed lemonade using water tinted pink from a performer's costume, then marketed it as "strawberry lemonade." While historians debate whether the story is completely true, it remains one of the area's most famous legends.

Circus performers once called the property home.
Before it became a resort, the land served as the winter headquarters for the Mabie Circus and later other famous circuses. At its peak, hundreds of clowns, acrobats, trainers, and performers from more than 26 circuses spent their winters here, with elephants, lions, and other animals roaming the grounds.

The property is much older than the resort itself.
Long before hotels were built, the land around Delavan Lake was home to Native American communities. The property still contains more than 40 ancient effigy mounds, some dating back over 2,000 years, making Lake Lawn one of the few resorts where guests are staying on land with such deep archaeological significance.

Big-band legends performed in the ballroom.
During the 1940s, Lake Lawn became a popular entertainment destination when the Mutual Broadcasting Network aired live performances from its ballroom. Notable entertainers, including Lawrence Welk, performed at the resort, making it a Midwest hotspot for music and dancing.
